Motor Recovery and Cortical Reorganization After Mirror Therapy in Chronic Stroke Patients: A Phase II Randomized Controlled Trial.
This randomised study compared the grip force, spasticity, pain, dexterity, hand-use in daily life, and quality of life of 20 chronic stroke patients receiving mirror therapy and 20 receiving therapy with no mirrors for six weeks. Functional MRI scans were also done to show differences in neural activation patterns within the brain. This phase II trial showed some effectiveness for mirror therapy in chronic stroke patients and is the first to associate mirror therapy with cortical reorganization i.e. rewiring of the brain in response to mirror therapy.
